Because I truly enjoy working with families, I have put together a list of several occasions to take advantage of the moment and capture the greatest treasure of all time: family!
Great Times for Family Photos
1. Moving Into a New Home
There is nothing more exciting than moving to a new place. With the opportunity to have a new start, why not plan a photoshoot to showcase your home, its details, and your new life inside of it? Because of how important a move is, the memories around it are sure to abound.
With all of the stress of actually moving, it may be hard to slow down and enjoy the process. A lifestyle shoot is perfect for this type of session, capturing special moments in a more laid-back way.
2. Vacation Time!
One unique occasion for professional family photos is during vacation! Sure, you can set up a selfie stick or tripod and make attempts at collecting your family into the frame, but that can only go so far. For one, contacting a local photographer can give you insight into some of the most interesting and beautiful places to photograph in.
It's always a treat to capture travelers to a new place and watch them enjoy what we, as locals, see every day.
Alternatively, there are plenty of photographers that would jump at the chance to travel alongside a family to capture photos. Not only does it give me as a photographer a chance to shoot in a different location than usual, but it also allows me to unlock my creativity and vision while we work with clients.
3. Seasons Changing & Kids Growing Up
If you have children, then you know how fast time begins to go by. Before you know it, they are all grown up. If there is one thing to think about when looking for opportunities for family photos, your kid's milestone years may take the cake.
Milestone years are different for everyone, but 1st, 5th, 10th, 16th, and 18th birthdays are a great place to start. Each of these years has one thing in common; they are markers for growth and experience.
Changes are well-marked with the seasons, also. Seeing your child’s growth along with nature’s passing of time in photos is a beautiful way to capture how they’re evolving in, and relating to, the world around them.
Seasons changing applies to more than just the weather. Your five year old in the fall or your senior high school student in the summer are both examples of times that are really special and transformative.
Photos from these times are very special when looking back on them, and you and your children can truly appreciate having these special memories captured in time.
4. First Day of School and Graduation Ceremonies
In addition to age milestones, there are two MAJOR milestones that those of you with children go through that truly mark the progression of your child growing up.
The first days of school can be incredibly exciting and emotional, as your child is now about to enter a season of life full of personal growth. Capturing the first day's jitters and excitement is such a wonderful way to hold on to a very beautiful memory.
Likewise, a child's graduation is also a very important occasion for portraits. This is the culmination of the season of life that began on that first day of school. Because of how busy graduation season can be, I recommend scheduling these portraits as early in advance as possible to ensure that you can schedule a session on the day of graduation.
5. Around the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays
As your family changes and grows, children move off to college, and scheduling can get complicated. That's why I recommend scheduling family photos during the time of year that everyone is together.
Holidays make for a wonderful time to plan family photos since that is when everyone is home. Once again, it is a good idea to get on my books early because holiday sessions can be the busiest season.
Bonus tip: when planning holiday photos, don't be afraid to show some personality with things like ugly sweater photos, etc.!
